ENZ090: FUNCTIONAL READING

Reading and using materials of a functional nature – self-help, appearance, cooking, work, maps, community access, shopping, personal safety, and other areas that will help the student access community services and a productive life. This course is based on a student’s yearly individualized educational plan –IEP.

ENZ100: FUNCTIONAL ENGLISH

This course is designed to meet IEP goals for students who qualify for Special Education in reading and/or writing. 

ENZ101, ENZ102: ENGLISH 9

Credits 0.5
This full year course emphasizes improvement in broad general areas of reading (theme, plot, characterization) writing (themes, essay tests, book reports), spelling, literature (novel, short story, poetry), and oral presentations. Supplemental reading assignments will enhance the student’s social responsibilities and personal growth. Unlike General Education English, the curriculum pace is IEP driven.

Each high school has texts and reading selections which support the theme of multiculturalism and provide the opportunity for students to explore, reflect, and create in a number of communication styles. Unlike General Education English, the curriculum pace is IEP driven.

MAZ 097, MAZ 098, MAZ 099: MULTI-LEVEL MATH

This class allows students to build their foundational mathematical skills based on their special education IEP math goals, such as arithmetic operations using rational numbers; area, perimeter, and volume of geometric figures, congruence and similarity, angle relationships, the Pythagorean theorem, the rectangular coordinate system, sets and logic, ratio and proportion, estimation, formulas, solving and graphing simple equations and inequalities.

MAZ100, MAZ110: MATH LEVEL 1

Students will work on improving their basic math skills, as well as their fluency of these skills. Although students will be exposed to a diverse amount of content based on need, the skills of adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing whole numbers will be emphasized. Students will begin working with decimal numbers, with the use of money being a key area of instruction. Students will also begin to gain an understanding of the basics of working with fractions.
